Biography
The Ruffians are the hottest original Celtic pub band. Period. Rising
from the New York Irish scene, they incorporate the heart and soul of
Celtic music with the exuberance of American and British punk rock. Their
original songs and inventive interpretations of traditional Irish dance
music make them one of the most exciting bands out today.
In a downtown Irish pub in New York City, 1998, The Ruffians were formed.
Brothers Sean (guitar, vocals, bodhran) and Dan Griffin (bass, b vocals,
bones) joined creative forces with Jerome Morris (drums, percussion),
and Kevin Meehan (button accordion) to create the kind of energy associated
with bands like The Pogues, The Dropkick Murphys, Blur, and Flogging
Molly. The Ruffians are accompanied by some of the areas finest traditional
players.
In the time The Ruffians have been together they have opened for Black
47 numerous times, The Popes, The Whole Shebang and were asked
to play for “The Good Friday Agreement” peace talk. They have
played at the Knitting Factory for the irish film festival, the Craic
fest, as well as the 2003 People’s Fleadh and the 2004
Irish Rock Fest with Neck and Icewagon Flu. The Ruffians
are currently gigging around the tri-state area, promoting the release
of their LP “Live at CBGB’s” and their two EP’s.
They are becoming a favorite at Maggie Mae’s in New York,
McKinnons in Hartford, CT, and Mick O’Shea’s
in Baltimore, MD. If there is good music to be heard and fine whiskey
to be drunk, The Ruffians will be there.

The Members
 |
 |
Sean Griffin-
Vocals, guitar, bodhran:
Sean plays guitar and handles the singer/songwriter duties as well as most managerial duties and bookings. He’s a dirty, filthy pirate, but we love him anyways. His writing depicts the joys and sorrows of being human, and his working class sensibility can relate to Irish, English, and Americans alike. You can find him at most bars in NYC, as well as some traditional seisiúns in the Bronx.

 |
|
Dan Griffin- Backup
vocals, bones:
Dans playing can only be described as performance art. His energy and enthusiasm can get any crowd going in no time. |
 |
|
Jerome Morris-
Drum kit, percussion:
Jerome Morris is a master of drums and percussion, and hard to capture on film becuase of his insane speed. Don’t let those glasses fool you... Jerome is a wild man. Just think what he could do with that kind of rhythm. His precise articulation and control makes him a driving force in the group. The Derry Journal hails Jerome as “one of the best drummers in the world”. |
 |
|
Sean Sheridan-
Bass, backup vocals.
Sean is a driving force behind the band. His bass playing works
perfectly with Jerome’s drums. He is a large reason for the
improved sound of the band and has some nice vocals to boot! Sean
Sheridan is also responsible for engineering and producing The Ruffians
first EP “Naked and Famous”. Sean has a studio in Gaylordsville
and is responsible for many great sounding punk and indie rock records
from the Connecticut and New York areas. |
 |
|
Andrew Goodsight- Bass.
Bassist for the popular Irish rock group Black 47, and co-writer and producer of the album “There Will Be Another Day”, by Seanchai and the Unity Squad, a collaboration with Chris Byrne, formally with Black 47.

Andrew Goodsight’s many recording credits include studio work with: Meredith Brooks, Mazzy Star, Snow, Tricky and Mugs of Cypress Hill. Andrew Sharpe- Uileann pipes
Andrew a.k.a. “the kid” brings a wealth of talent and
enthusiasm to the band. Not only is he a world class
step dancer, but he is also a great musician. He plays
the highland pipes, uileann pipes, flute, whistles,
banjo, and Sean’s son Michael’s toy button accordion
has gone missing, so don’t be surprised if it makes an
appearance on stage in the near future. He has graced
the stage with the likes of the Dropkick Murphy’s and
Black 47 and can be found in the pubs in Woodlawn on
any night of the week (or day for that matter). For
all you female fans, Andrew is now handling all
official flirting since many of the boys are now
married and have children. Please direct all ass
grabbing and breast flashing to him. |

|
Eckard Lehmann- Uileann pipes and whistles
The German import comes from the traditional irish folk section and has produced 3 successful CDs with his band Blue Stone. Regularly attends the Willie Clancey Summerschool in Miltown Malbay, Ireland and can be found at most sessions in Connecticut. |
 |
|
Joe Mulvanerty- Uileann pipes, tin whistle,
flute, low pipe, bodhran.
Joe is by far, the best damn pipe player around right now. A travelling member of Black 47, Joe sits in with the boys whenever he can, and always plays on the recorded material. It’s always a nice surprise to have him at a gig, but it also means our drink tab will be a little higher than usual. |
 |
|
Kevin “Mad Dog” Meehan- Button accordion.
A long-time Ruffian and now part-time pirate, Kevin sits in from time to time and provides a great traditional backing that adds to the spirit of the songs. |
